Theparents of John were John andSusannah (Boylston) Adams. Hisfather was a farmer of limitedmeans, to which he added the bus-iness of shoemaking. He gave hiseldest son, John, a classical educa- tion at Harvard College. Johngraduated in 1755, and at once took charge of theschool in Worcester, Mass. This he found but aschool of affliction, from which he endeavored togain relief by devoting himself, in addition, to thestudy of law. For this purpose he placed himselfunder the tuition of the only lawyer in the town. Hehad thought seriously of the clerical professionbut seems to have been turned from this by what hetermed the frightful engines of ecclesiastical coun-cils, of diabolical malice, and
