Burr, a senior at Vian High School in Ganns, Okla., enlisted in the OKARNG on Sept. 22, 2011, and credits her mother’s military service as her reason for enlisting. “My mom was in the active Army,” she says. “I wanted to follow in her footsteps in the military, but also be able to attend college. The Guard lets me do both.” Burr plans to attend Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant, utilizing the OKARNG’s tuition waiver. Upon completion of basic training and her advanced individual training next summer she will be assigned to the 120th Engineer Battalion’s Headquarters Company in Okmulgee as a signal support systems specialist.
