Monuments of Massena, Lefebvre &c.,Pere la Chaise


The view taken in 1828, shows the monuments to the Imperial Generals Massena, Lefebvre in the cemetery Pere la Chaise in Paris. The former was with Napoleon during the Italian campaign and in Paris at the ratification of the Peace with Austria. He was also Governor of Rome and commander-in-chief in Italy while Napoleon Buonaparte was in Egypt. He forced the passage of Adige against a superior force and routed the Austrians near Caldiero. He won honours at the battles of Eylau, Pfaffanham, Landshut and Eckmul and he defence of Asperne and Easling. He compelled Wellington to retreat in Spain to Torres Vedras. He felt neglected by Louis XVIII and joined Buonaparte during the Hundred Days but after the Second Restoration he retired. Lefebvre became a general and fought under Pichegru, Moreau, Hoche and Jourdan and at Stockbach. He is famous for entering the Council of Five Hundred and rescuing the President Lucian Buonaparte. In Russia he took Dantzic and was created Duke of Dantzic. He defended the passes of the Tyrol and fought at Than, Abersberg and Eckmul. He joined Napoleon on his return but after the defeat he was pardoned by Louis XVIII after the Second Restoration and died peacefully.
