His efficient service and sterling char-acter marked him as specially eligible for further of-ficial preferment, and he was then elected countyclerk. He retained this office five consecutive terms,of two years each, and his administration was mostable and satisfactory, the same being on record asone of the most able and satisfactory, the same be-ing on record as one of the best given to that im-portant office
