This bronze statue of Charlemagne (also known as Charles the Great), accompanied by his vassals Roland and Olivier, is situated in front of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. It was created by the sculptor Louis Rochet and his younger brother Charles between 1853 and 1867. Charlemagne was the king of the Franks from 742-814 AD and he successfully united (for the first time since the Romans) a large proportion of the peoples of Western Europe, forcibly Christianizing many of them along the was crowned the first Holy Roman Emperor in 800AD.
