Governor Nicholson did much to help thecollege, though after a time he quarreled fiercelywith Rev. Mr. Blair. At first, and for many years thereafter,young Indians were taught in some of thedepartments of William and Mary. They weretrained to do missionary work among their ownpeople. Three early Presidents of the United Stateswere students of William and Mary were Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe,and John Tyler. John Marshall, the famouschief justice of the United States Supreme Court,also studied law there.
