Herpes simplex virus particles. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through Herpes simplex virus (HSV) particles (virions, round). There are two types of Herpes simplex, HSV-1 and HSV-2. HSV-1 typically infects the nose, mouth and face, causing cold sores. HSV-2 typically infects the genitals, causing genital herpes. There is no cure for herpes simplex infection, but outbreaks can be treated with antiviral drugs. Magnification: x113,300, when printed 10 cm wide.
