Apollo 17 lunar landing module 'Challenger' at the Taurus-Littrow landing site, December 1972. Astronauts Eugene A. Cernan and Harrison H. Schmitt descended in the lunar module to explore the moon's surface while Ronald E. Evans, command module pilot, remained with the Command and Service Modules in lunar orbit.
