Blue sky portrait, from Salford riverside walkway, white cantilever cable-stayed Trinity Bridge across River Irwell, Manchester
The cantilever, spar cable-stayed Trinity Footbridge, designed by Spanish architect, Santiago Calatrava, opened in 1994 at a cost of £ million. The River Irwell, in industrial times, was heavily polluted by factory effluent and raw sewage. As with Salford Quays, the one-time location of Manchester Docks, the river has undergone clean-up and regeneration with a riverside walkway, a popular lunch-break location, on the Salford bank (foreground). A view to the Manchester bank of the bridge.
