Parapodium from seliger IS. lateral view; b. composite spiniger; c, composite falciger. Remarks.—These specimens closely fit descriptions gi\cn b\ Hartmann- Schroder (1962) and Laubier (1967), especially in regard to the number, length and position of cephalic and tentacular structures, parapodial structine and gen- eral setal morphology and distribution. Palps of the holotype were described as smooth, but those of Californian spec- imens are pseudoannulated. as were palpi of New Caledonia imlixiduals (Laubier. 1967). Palps were missing from Peruvian paratspes. A very thin composite spiniger accompanies each anterior fascicle o'( thick composite falcigers (Fig. la-c). Hartmann-Schroder mentioned the occasional appearance of very fine bristles among anterior segments which corresponds to this seta. Examination of paratypes showed thai this seta was disiribtitcd as in Californian specimens. Ihc number of tentacular cirri is dependent on inelis idtial si/c and this sari- ability has been discussed by Hartmann-Schroder (1962, 1974) and I atihicr (19(i7). Large specimens of//. Iwlcroniorplia have up to 6 pairs of tentacular cirri, and Hetcropodarkc lictcromorplui afruana has up to S pairs. Vaiiahilitv of this char- acter has been imtcil in othei' hesionid genera: Blake (1975) found iiivcnilcs o\' Gypiis hrvvipalpn to have h ptiirs of tentacular cirri whereas adtilis possess S. This information suggests that ke> s to hesionids should be used carefulU in to this Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page images that may have been digitally enhanced for readability - coloration and appearance of these illustrations may not perfectly resemble the original Southern California Academy of Sciences.
