In addition to assisting in the daily operation and maintenance of all engine room machinery, Reed inspects the ships engines and auxiliaries, monitoring temperatures, pressures, and other parameters to ensure machinery is operated within safe, standard industry practice. He monitors evaporator operations ensuring necessary temperatures, pressures, and water levels are maintained. He ensures quality of evaporator output and feed storage tanks through salinity testing. He ensures correct distribution of evaporator output. He operates boilers by tending fires by controlling fuel air flow, cutting fires in and out, maintaining correct water level, operating soot blowers, controlling feed pump, and repairing minor leaks on the boiler front. Diehl is one of 15 fleet replenishment oilers that make up MSC’s Combat Logistics Force. MSC provides on-time logistics, strategic sealift, as well as specialized missions anywhere in the world, in contested or uncontested environments.
