Adelie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae) returning over sea ice to their rookery. Although only around 70 centimetres tall, Adelies are swift runners and agile jumpers. They \toboggan\" over icy terrain, sliding on their bellies while pushing with their feet and wings. These highly social birds live in large colonies (rookeries) that may contain tens of thousands of birds. The males build low nests of pebbles and each pair normally raises two chicks a year. Adelies dive to feed on krill and small fish. They are found around the Antarctic coast and on subantarctic islands. Photographed on Signy Island, South Orkney Islands."
