Coffer in Nanban (Southern Barbarian) Style, Edo period (1615–1868), 18th century, Japan, Black lacquer on wood with gold painted design, H. 24 13/16 in. (63 cm); W. 52 3/16 in. ( cm); D. 23 7/16 in. ( cm), Furniture, Made-for-export lacquers were exuberantly decorated with designs from all manner of Asian and Western sources. A variety of chests, coffers, and writing desks, such as this rare large piece, were produced in the Edo period for the Dutch East India Company
