After the failureof that attempt he returned to the United States andentered the merchant service as captain of a vesselin the trade between Baltimore and the Mediterraneanports. Retired from the sea in 1826, removed toNorth Mississippi in 1835, and, engaging in cottonplanting, amassed a considerable fortune.
