The ponte Vecchio is the oldest brige in Florence Built in 1345 It was the only bridge to survive the bombings of WWII There have always been workshops on the bridge but the butchers blacksmiths and tanners who were the original occupiers on the bridge were evicted by Duke Ferdinando I in 1593because of the stench they were creating as they used the River Arno as a convienent rubbish dump The workshops were rebuilt and let to the more elegant goldsmiths who remain today Their workshops over hang the bridge and are suported by timber brakets called sporti A bust of the most famous of all goldsmiths Benvenuto Cellini 1500 71 was placed in the middle of the bridge in 1900
