A fewDutch were here when, in 1613, CaptainArgall sailed from Virginia against theFrench at Port Royal, Acadia, now Annap-olis in Nova Scotia, who were encroachingupon the English possessions on the coastof Maine. He compelled them to surren-der. On his return, he visited the Dutchtraders of Manhattan Island, and forcedthem also, as it had been discovered byCabot in 1497, to acknowledge the sov-ereignty of Englandover this entire was in 1614 thatthe Dutch States-Gen-eral, in the chartergiven to a company ofmerchants, named theHudson Valley NewNetherland.
