However, since we could not determine whether the filaments of O. quekettii were alive at the time of fungal attachment, the nature of this relationship ( saprophytic or parasitic) could not be resolved. In fractured samples of M. cf. studeri, a macroscopically visible green band was observed extending parallel to the basal plate about 2 cm below the growing coral surface. Examination of scanning electron micrographs of resin-cast preparations revealed that the green band contained both algal and fungal filaments (Fig. 5). Some of the filaments in the lower part of the green band exited the corallum and spanned pore spaces.
