Herdaughter, Miss CoraStockham, brought awarm enthusiasm to thework, and the magazinethrived during its babyhood on the personal energy and de-votion with which she conducted the editorial now sainted Sarah B. Cooper contributed the open-ing article of the first issue, the initial paragraph of which. PUBLISHERS RETROSPECT. 575 was prophetic, as follows: I believe, dear friends, thatthere is a vast range of unmapped country within usawaiting discovery; a vast domain of unexplored territory,as yet unpreempted and uncultivated, toward which theeye of Friedrich Froebel, the great educational Columbus,was directed with a steady and divine gaze. Was not thisa prophetic gleam of the child-study and child-culturemovements which have developed in the ten years sincethis utterance of Mrs. Cooper? Among others who contributed to the first volume ofThe Kindergarten, and who have passed out of earthservice into the choir invisible of history, was ElizabethPeabody, who at once adopted The Kindergarten intoher heart of hearts as the successor to the KindergartenMessenger.
