The Shrine of Our Lady of Weissenstein .
The Shrine of Our Lady of Weissenstein (German Wallfahrtsort Maria Weissenstein) is one of the main shrines in Alto Adige, and is a considerable amount, 1520 meters, between the villages of Nova Ponente and Monte San Pietro (Petersberg), clearly visible from city of Bolzano. The sanctuary was founded in 1553, after the discovery of the miraculous statue, an alabaster Pieta, made by a local farmer, Leonhard Weißensteiner (hence the name of the shrine), which appeared to the Virgin Mary, healed from his illness. By way of thanks, Our Lady asked him to erect a church, where those who wanted to could go to praise and invocation. Work began in 1638 and its consecration took place in 1673. Instead of the convent was built in 1722. The site was found in 1718 by the order of the Servants of Mary of Innsbruck. In 1787 the sanctuary was abolished by Emperor Joseph II, and the statue was moved to Laives, the church was desecrated and used as a storage timber. In 1836 the shrine, repurchased by the Servants of Mary of Innsbruck, returns to being a place of prayer in the fascist period of German monks were replaced by monks of the Italian language, belonging to the Servants of Mary of Vicenza, who still care . In 1985 the sanctuary was elevated to minor basilica. On the occasion of the Jubilee of 2000 was renewed the youth hostel and the home of the pilgrim. Wikipedia read
