ST. MARY S ITALIAN CHURCH, RED JACKET. rangements satisfactory to his tastes. Aslong as the house was not yet plastered,he had the contractor, for one hundreddollars additional, build a kitchen and adining-room. In his time he not onlypaid for the house, but furnished thechurch with a high-altar, new pews, agallery, a bell and belfry (the first in the 230 HISTORY OF THE DIOCESE OF district), bought another lot for fifty dol-lars, and surrounded the whole propertywith a picket fence. At this time the con-gregation numbered two hundred fami-lies. Alexander Glaube and son dug thewell for twenty-five dollars. In Decem-ber, 1886, Father Reynaert bought twolots just across the street for three hun-dred dollars from Ambrose Campbell ofMarquette. On these lots Father Bordasbuilt a modern church 90x45 feet at an. REV. BENJAMINO HERTO. expenditure of seven thousand dollars, not including the interior finishing. Hepaid for the work done as he went along, and for this reason, at the time of his re-moval, it was still unfinished. Rev. Man-ning plastered it, and Bishop Vertin dedi-cated it in 1892 to St. Augustine, thesame patron as of the old church. As the church, so the house, too, hadoutlived the comforts. Father Bennett tore down the old churcli in the fall of1906 and built on its site a modern rec-tory. In this work he received more thana liberal assistance from his congregationand other townsmen, but particularly theladies of the congregation deserve creditfor their unselfish devotedness at fairsgotten up to help pay for this new, muchcreditable home. The congregation consists of about onehundred families, and, according to na-tionality, they are Irish, French,German, and a mixture of every-thing else. After the pastors removal fromClarksburg
