William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne, British Whig statesman and Prime Minister, (1893). Melbourne (1779-1848) succeeded Earl Grey as Prime Minister in 1834. As Prime Minister when the young Queen Victoria ascended the throne, he acted as her political mentor until he left office in 1841.
