Trainee therapist undergoing instruction in hypnotism. Hypnosis is a trance-like state, characterised by extreme susceptibility to suggestion. Originally hypnosis was thought to be a form of sleep, but modern EEG measurements show no correlation between brain electrical activity during hypnosis and sleep. In those subjects who respond strongly to hypnosis, some therapeutic value may be seen. It may be useful in subjects suffering from panic attacks, extreme anxiety, phobias or in the treatment of some addictive habits (eg smoking). It has also been used in psychotherapy, allowing patients to access memory of repressed traumatic events in their past.
