Factory and industrial management . eir supportfrom the mining industry and metal production increased by 50,000,and it is estimated that there are at present in the country at least200,000 such persons. Whereas in the period 1871-5 the averageannual production of ores and minerals (except stone) was 939,092tons, the production in 1902 was 3,536,759 tons, in 1908 3,678,000tons, and last year considerably exceeded 5,000,000 tons. Of thisincreased output some details will be found in the following table:— Mining of Ores and Minerals. Metric tons of 2,204 lb. Average, Average, In 1905. 1871-5. 18

North of this region, however, ores ofdifferent kinds occur, the most important being the deposits in Lap-land, from one-half to one and a half degree above the Arctic circle—these being, in respect of length, thickness and percentage of iron, among the richest in the world. Until within the last four years,of the ore-fields in this region, one only, that of Gellivare, was workedon a large scale. Now, however, since the extension of the Lulea-Gellivare railway to the Norwegian port of Narvik, which is freefrom ice all the year, an active and increasing production of ore isrecorded from the practically inexhaustible supplies of Kirunavaraand Luossavara. During 1906 the quantity of ore from Gellivareshipped from Lulea was 1,216,780 tons, an increase of nearly 145,000tons as compared with the preceding
