EVOLUTION OF THE LAG SCREW and the machinefor making them, showing the general construction of the cutter and the principle upon which it operates, h being alag screw which is being cut and c the cutter, eachrevolving in the direction indicated by its lag screw and the cutter run together, justlike a worm and a worm wheel. The cuttingface of the cutter is parallel to and in line withthe axis of the lag screw. The cutter spindlecarrier, k, is carried by horizontal trunnions inuprights on the carriage. It is obvious that adepression of the arm, k, will bring the cuttingpoints in toward the center of the lag screw, whilean elevation of the arm will swing the cutter outfrom the center of the lag screw, or cause it to cuta thread of larger diameter. The bar, n, of rec-tangular section, is fastened rigidly to an uprightupon the frame, so that when the carriage movesalong it slides over this bar. The under edge ofthe bar is not stra
