Albert Einstein and his wife, Elsa, arriving in San Diego, USA, on New Year's Eve 1930. Einstein was one of the greatest theoretical physicists in history. In 1905, whilst a patent clerk, he published 3 papers that would lead to his 1921 Nobel Prize: calcula- tions on Brownian motion, the photoelectric effect and special relativity. In 1915 he published his General Theory of Relativity, explaining gravity as a distortion of space-time by a mass. In 1933 he moved to America, working on the Manhattan Project in WW2. Thereafter he was a campaigner for nuclear disarmament. In 1952 he declined an invitation to become President of Israel.
