In India, a Hindu woman lays beside her dead husband in a grave and will be buried alive. The practice of a widow joining her dead husband in death is called Sati or Suttee. The more usual form of Sati, was for the widow to be burned alive with her dead husband. Sati in any form is now illegal. After an 18th century work by Bernard Picart.
