He was not the founder,much less Was he the organiser of theRoman Empire ; yet his life marks agreat change in European history. Ihave tried to sho^V (andt^ave done my best toexpress on the title-page) what this change means,how it was in part the result of pre-existing tenden-cies, and was due in part to Caesars extraordinaryforce of will and intellect. In a volume of this size,it has been impossible to keep this main object inview without sacrificing many details and avoidingcriticism and controversy on innumerable disputedpoints, whether of Roman constitutional law, or ofthe geography of the Gallic and Civil wars. Thetendencies of the age, and the growth of Caesarscharacter, are the two leading themes of the book ;and I have endeavoured to treat these as far aspossible by the help
