Ithas been operated more or less experimentally for thelast month, and its success so far has justified the sanguinepredictions of the electricians and engineers who effectedthe installation. As has been well known the Metropolitan TractionCompany has been trying for some time to find a systemwhich would be a good substitute for the trolley on thelines of light traffic and which would not prove objection-able to the ultra-conservative New Yorkers. Aftercarefully looking over the field the company selected theplans offered by the General Electric Company, as offer-ing the most advantages and being the most likely toprove successful. The long stretch of road on Lenoxavenue was chosen as the scene of the experiment. In formulating the project the Traction Companyproceeded upon the most conservative lines, and deter-. The plan therefore contem-plated the construction of the line as if for a cable road, inorder that, should the electrical system prove unsuccessful, the electrical portion could be taken out and the cables andpulleys of a regular cable system introduced into theconduit without loss o£ time and at comparatively smallexpense. Upon this basis construction was commencedand no pains or expense have been omitted to render theinstallation and operation successful. The Lenox avenueline is adouble track road, starting at the car house at146th street and running directly south to ii6th street, into whch it turns and proceeds as far west as Man-hattan avenue. It turns here and runs as far south as 108thstreet, along which it is laid to the junction of that street and Columbus avenue. The distric
