Light micrograph of the tongue or glossa of a honey bee, Apis mellifera. The tongue forms the tip of the bee's proboscis, which is located in a deep groove beneath the head. The proboscis is used for sipping nectar and honey, which flow up a groove in the underside of the tongue and into the mouth. The tiny trangular organ at the tip of the tongue is known as the labellum. Magnification: x70 at 35mm size.
