Type: Antique engraving. 1814 Newton map of Hampstead, Belsize Park, Primrose Hill, St John's Wood, Chalk Farm & Kilburn. This scarce 1814 map covers the area now occupied by Hampstead, West Hampstead, Belsize Park, Primrose Hill, St John's Wood & Kilburn (principally the modern London postal codes NW3, NW6 and NW8). The map is orientated towards the north west. The road which runs along the left hand edge of the map is Kilburn High Road (from where it becomes Maida Vale at the bottom of the map) & Shoot Up Hill at the top of the map. The (then) village of Hampstead and Hampstead Heath occupy the top right hand quarter of the map, with all buildings in the village being marked on the map. West Hampstead (then West End) is shown as a hamlet on the left hand side of the map. The road now known as Hampstead High Street, Rosslyn Hill & Haverstock Hill is shown on the right hand side of the map running from Hampstead Village down to the bottom of the map through the Manor of Belsize. Primrose Hill is marked at the bottom of the map, close to the original buildings of Chalk Farm. Other places of interest marked include Chalcott (shown as a house or farm buildings), Belsize House, Belsize Park, Rosslyn House, Fortune Green, Gospel Oak (the original tree itself is shown), St John's Wood Farm, The Spaniards, Shoot up Hill Farm, Vale of Health, North End, Wildwood, Ponds of the Hampstead Water Works. Streets named on the map include Shoot up Hill, Kilburn Lane (now Quex Rd, West End Lane), West End Lane, Blind Lane (now Gondar Gardens/Ajax Lane), Shoot Up Hill Lane (now Mill Lane), Hampstead High Street, Branch Hill, Well Walk, Flask Hill, Pond Street, Belsize Lane, Church Row, Frognal, Branch Hill, Well Walk, Flask Walk, New End, Holly Walk, Prospect Walk, Re
