Iglesia del la Caridad del Cobre, the Copper Church is one of the holiest sanctuaries in Cuba. In 1606 the icon was found floating in the Bahia de Nipe off the northern coast of the Granma province by three sailors. The icon a mother and child figurine had the words inscribed on it ‘’I am the Virgin of Charity’’. The present church was built in 1927. The most famous relic of the church is the golden guerrilla figure pledged by Fidel Castro’s mother for his safe deliverance from fighting in the Sierra Maestra. The other famous relic is Ernest Hemingway’s Nobel prize for his novel The Old Man and the Sea
