They weresteadily and resolutely met, their repeated assaults being repulsedwith a heavy loss in officers, besides rank and file killed, wounded,and captured. The Unionists fought behind intrenchments, andtheir casualties were trifling. The following day, August 31st, the fourteenth corps marchedalong the Macon line, destroyed the track for several miles, andabout four oclock took up position on the left of the fourth corpswhich had formed in line of battle.
