Abbey with Restohations, 1904. which we are speaking, the Close was never other than a sortof Paddys Market, of tumble-down second-hand shops. Itappeared to rain there more frequently than in any other partof the town, for we never recollect the wretchedly uneven streetbeing without ample pools of water. None of these buildings were of architectural or historicvalue, and the clearing of them away, and the erection of the Transition 159 magnificent Clark Town Halls was one of the greatest improve-ments ever made in Paisley (p. 152).
