The Bhimbetka rock shelters are an archaeological site with the oldest-known rock art in India and is one of the largest prehistoric complexes in the world spanning the prehistoric Paleolithic and Mesolithic periods. Located 45km south-east of Bhopal, the UNESCO World Heritage Site consists of 7 hills, with over 750 rock shelters distributed over 10 km. The Bhimbetka petroglyphs is among the oldest in the world, some of which are similar to aboriginal rock art in Australia and the paleolithic Lascaux cave paintings in France.
