Strawbridge & Clothier's quarterly . -eter of the wire at its end; if it be reducedto a line point, the work may be performedwith great exactitude. The metallic thread conducting the elec-tric current becomes transformed by thismeans into a special graver for glass, andin spite of the hardness of the substancethe operation requires no effort, for the cor-roding force is furnished by the action of thecurrent upon the saline solution. Eitherpole may be used for engraving, but it re-quires a weaker current to engrave with thenegative pole. If, instead of the plain surface spoken of,it is desired to engrave on a curved one,the same result may be obtained by thick-ening the solution with a gummy substancein order to make it adhere to the glass, orby turning the object in a basin containingthe solution, so that a freshly-wetted surfacemay be continually presented to the oper-ator. It will be evident that the variety ofuses to which this process can be applied isinexhaustible. B. R. W. STRAWBRIDGE & CLOTHIERS QUARTERLY. 351. CONDUCTED
