The organism also secretes a mild toxin as is shown inthree ways by a slight inflammatory exudation, by a lympho-cytosis and by the production of a specific antibody. The finding of this peculiar lesion naturally suggested ex-perimental work. We first obtained sputum from acutecases of whooping cough and inoculated it into the tracheaof a puppy and of a rabbit. Later the animals were killedand the respiratory tract studied microscopically. Organ-isms identical in every way with those found in whoopingcough were present between the cilia in the trachea andbronchi of both animals. Attempts were next made to obtain pure cultures andafter considerable effort we succeeded in getting threedifferent strains. These were inoculated into a number of.
