Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, England, UK: on a hot summer’s day in 1935, five Yorkshire youngsters cluster around the A. Coletta & Sons ice cream van touring the streets of Huddersfield under the slogan: “Purity Guaranteed”. Two boys stand on the van’s running board as one takes a vanilla cornet or cone from the ice cream vendor, who looks at the camera. Two more boys and a girl stand watching the transaction. Two of the boys wear one-piece bathing costumes. Huddersfield is a large former mill town in the metropolitan borough of Kirklees, West Yorkshire. This is a square detail of a monochrome photograph taken in 1935 by George and Kathleen Blenkhorn of Huddersfield and has been scanned direct from an original print in a Blenkhorn family album. One of the boys pictured is probably the couple’s only son, George, who was born in 1931.
