Jhum is the main crop for the Tribal community who are living in Chittagong Hill Tracks in Bangladesh. Jhum crops- paddy, chilly, ginger, turmeric, corn, pumpkin, cotton, brinjal, okra, spinach some other vegetables harvesting on hill slopes every year. Tribal farmers apply their special technic to cultivate Jhum. We can be produced anything except salt and kerosene through jhum cultivation, said Mrong chu, a farmer who is living in high hill remote area of Bandarban hill district. Eleven indigenous communities are living in the hilly lands that are dependent on nature. If the weather is vulnerable we may die, we cannot cultivate jhum, said Ang Thu khai. This year weather was good, I have harvested 8 acres of land on the hill and I am happy to fulfill my expectation, Ang Thu added. In this season entire hilly lands get golden look. Farmer set up Machangs- houses on the hills to protect and processing paddy and other crops. Around 9,000 hectares of land in the Bandarban has been cultivated Jhum crops in the year of 2019. Napolie Chakma, 42, who is living in the remote area of Thanchi , said, “last five years we did not get enough crops due to bad weather but this year we got enough paddy, God helped us.”
