Hongwanji is the mother temple and headquarters of Judo Shinshu Hangwanji-ha. The official name is Ryukoku-zan Hongwanji, commonly referred to as Nishi Hongwanji. During the reign of the 11th shushu (head priest) of Hongwanji (1543 - 1592) the Hongwanji returned to Kyoto and was reestablished at Horikawa Rokujo,where it remains today.
