MANCHESTER SURVIVOR COMES BACK AFTER 2 YEARS. 7 OCTOBER 1944, PORTSMOUTH. UP TO THE COLLAPSE OF FRANCE IN 1940 LEADING TELEGRAPHIST WALTER SCOTT WAS MARCEL GILLES, A FRENCH NAVAL RATING. HE JOINED THE ROYAL NAVY IN HIS NEW NAME AND SERVED IN THE CRUISER HMS MANCHESTER. HE WAS CAPTURED WHEN THE SHIP WAS TORPEDOED OFF TUNISIA IN AUGUST 1942, RECOGNISED AS A FRENCHMAN AND IMPRISONED AT TOULEN BEFORE BEING SENT TO GERMANY. HE ESCAPED LATER TO JOIN THE FFI IN DEIPPE, WHERE HE REPORTED TO THE NAVAL AUTHORITIES WHEN THE CANADIANS MARCHED IN. HE IS NOW BACK IN BRITAIN, RE-KITTED AND READY FOR FURTHER
