Owl midge Uk
A close-up picture showing tiny owl midge, or owl fly, covered in pollen on the female flowers at the very base of the spadix in a cuckoo pint plant Arum maculata, also known as Lords and Ladies. The plant’s leaf that surrounds the spadix forms a hollow bulb around its base. It has been cut away to reveal the female flowers at the base of the spadix. The hairs above it prevent the the owl midges, or owl flies, and other insects from immediately escaping when they are attracted to the scent of the plant. Below the hairs are purple male, developing flowers and below this are yellow female flowers wheer the midge can be seen. The insects that escape through the hairs are covered in pollen and then pollinate other Cuckoo Pint plants. The berries of the cuckoo pint are poisonous. North Dorset England UK GB
