A boy holds up a bundle of miraa that has just been cut Khat qat or miraa is a plant whose leaves and tops are chewed extensively throughout East Africa the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula for its narcotic effect It is an amphetamine type stimulant which creates mild euphoria and excitement for those who take it It is classified as a drug of abuse by the World Health Organisation and is targeted by anti drug organisations such as the DEA It is said to cause mild to moderate psychological dependency and side effects can include mania depression and emotional instability Nevertheless in East Africa miraa has been used as a recreational drug and has been socially acceptable for generations In Kenya the main growing region is in and around Meru where a large market exists solely in miraa Meru Central Province Kenya
