Discarded statues of Romanian Communist Prime Minister Petru Groza and Lenin, Romania.

A statue of former Russian Communist leader Vladimir Lenin lies discarded beside a statue of first Romanian Communist Prime Minister Petru Groza, in the grounds of Mogosoaia Palace on the outskirts of Bucharest, Romania, on Saturday 5th August 2006. On January 1st 2007, and only 17 years after the bloody revolution that overthrew Communist dictator Nicolae Ceaucescu, Romania, along with Bulgaria, will join the European Union. Certain conditions have been put in place that must be met by Romania, these being a review of the judicial and tax systems, and a clamp down on corruption.
