The semi-open method consists in spraying the ethyl chloridon a specially devised mask or inhaler. The Ware inhaler, thenarcotile inhaler, the Herrenknecht or Ferguson mask, or theSeitz mask are the principal apparatus employed for this of these inhalers—the Seitz mask—are too complicated to beof practical use. The Ferguson inhaler, on account of its simplic-ity, is preferred by many anesthetists. Its construction is basedon the principle originally adopted, and which is still successfullyemployed by Herrenknecht in the Dental Clinic of the Universityof Freiburg. It consists essentially of a modified Esmarch mask, having two chambers, which are separated by a replaceable convexdiaphragm made of surgical gauze. The mask is covered withrubber cloth; the opening G is to be drawn together to between. If during expiration the opening G be closed bythe fingers and the mask tilted to allow the expired air to escapebetween the mask and the face, the induction of the anesthetizationwill be more rapid, and less ethyl chlorid will be used. The aver-age amount of anesthetic used by this method amounts to 30 to45 minims (2 to 3 Cc), and rarely over 75 minims (5 Cc.) areused. The open and semi-open method of ethyl chlorid adminis-tration is rarely accompanied by nausea or vomiting. This isprobably due to the presence of an abundance of fresh air and theavoidance of inspiring the chlorinated decomposition products,as occurs in the closed method. The closed method requires, in the main, a
