A fly properly slunggives almost as much shelter as a tent, and to mymind is more cheerful, as one is not completely shutin, and can see the beauties of nature about tents, one uses a small stove, but with a fly,the camp fire is more useful. There are many ways of putting up a fly, andthe experienced woodsman will see at a glancewhich one of the many suits best the campingplace he has chosen. As a rule, it is slung withthe highest part toward the fire, and sloping down84. toward the back in the shapeof a reflector. I have spent months in the wilder-ness with nothing but a fly for shelter; and to mymind no time is pleasanter than the evening hours, when, talking with your companions, you lie backon the bough beds and watch the sparks from thebalsam fire drift off into the night. The fly is only useful where wood is abundant, and in sparsely wooded country, such as the BehringSea coast, a tent and stove are necessary. The flytakes up very little space, and can be rolled up tosuit any pack. Men in the wilderness have used flies suc-cessfully in making boats when caught withoutfood, or crossing rivers in flood time.
