Spectacular and deeply sinister ruin, with shaped gables, spindly chimneys and dormers. The core of the building is late 17th. Century, possibly 1661, of advanced design, built for Edmund Appleby. More window than wall, on the lower floor at any rate, where there are five closely spaced bays. The surrounds are moulded and have pulvinated heads and flat hoods. The top storey has only three spaced-out windows. The house was extended right and left in the 18th. Century by Corey and Ferguson for the Kirklinton-Saul family, with a big extra wing. The shaped gables, giving the 18th. Century parts a Scottish look, date from then. ( Pevsner "The Buildings of England, Cumbria" ).
