Vanbrugh's Grand Bridge at Blemheim Palace, Oxfordshire


Vanbrugh's Grand Bridge in the grounds of Blenheim Palace was built by the playright Sir John Vanbrugh, the design was accepted in large part of the rubble from the original Woodstock Manor was used for the foundations of th bridge in consists of three water courses, one broad one to pass under the great central arch and two smaller canals. Blenheim Palace in Woodstock, Oxfordshire is a Grade 1 listed building. It was built in the early 18th century on the site of the ruined Woodstock Manor and park, and was given as a gift by Queen Ann to the 1st Duke of Marlborough John Churchill the military commander, who led allied forces in the Battle of Blenheim in1704. The 2000 acre park was landscaped by Capability palace is now the home of the 12th Duke of Marlborough and his family, and is famous as the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill.
