Early 19th Century headphones. 1894 illustration of a man using a 'bi-telephone', an early form of headphones. The bi-telephone was invented by the French engineer Ernest Mercadier in 1892 and consisted of miniature receives that were designed to be inserted in the ear. It was an incredible feat of miniaturisation for technology at the time and the result was remarkably similar to today's earbud headphones.
