In 1917 the concern increased the variety of its products, whenit began the manufacture of the Diamond Spring ginger ale, thedemand for which is growing rapidly. In this connection a largeassortment of tonics is also manufactured and distributed by thefirm. A specialty is made of fruit tonics, the flavoring for thestrawberry, raspberry, orange and lemon beverages being made fromthe real fruit. Carney & Company is one of the oldest liquor houses in NewEngland. It was established over 50 years ago by Michael Carney andhis brother, Matthew Carney, under the firm name of M. Carney &Brother. It was first located on White street, and later moved to thecorner of Hampshire and Concord streets. Twenty-four years ago,the present location, corner of Hampshire and Common streets, wassecured. Some years after the establishment of the business, the Carneybrothers dissolved partnership, and later the firm became known asM. Carney & Company. Matthew J. Carney, a nephew of the originalpartners, becoming a member. Michael Carney died in 1913, his deathbeing preceded by that of Matthew J. Carney, and on May i, 1914, theestate took James C.
