THE FORM OF BRIQUETTE FORTENSILE TESTS Mr. John Grant in 1871! presentedresults of a series of experimentswith different forms of briquettes andsizes of section. Ten years later| headopted the form now used in Eng-land which is substantially the sameas that recommended by the AmericanSociety of Civil Engineers in 1884,and, with a very slight alteration, in 1903. (See Fig. 12, p. 72.)The German Standard Briquette, also adopted by the French Commission ?Butlers Portland Cement, 1899, p. 200. •j-Proceedings Institution of Civil Engineers, Vol. XXXII, p. 282. jProceedings Institution of Civil Engineers, Vol. LXII, p. Fig. 21.—The German Standard Briquette(dimensions are in millimeters).{See page 92.) STANDARD CEMENT TESTS 93 in 1893, is shown in Fig. 21. The section is 5 square centimeters ( Inr). Results with this form of briquette are lower per unit of area thanthose of the American pattern. Prof. Jerome Sondericker* in studying thequality of strength and uniformity of breaking of different forms, found that agroove in the sides of the specimen lowered the unit strength about 13%.M. Feretf found that briquettes of 5 square centimeter section gave 46%higher strength per unit of area than briquettesof 16 square centimeter, andattributed this difference to lack of homogeneity throughout the section. TO CONVERT METRIC UNITS OF STRENGTH TO ENGLISH UNITS To convert values of kilograms per square centimeter (kg. per sq. cm.)to pounds per square inch (lb. per sq. in.),
